Dr Holmes is a very professional and nice doctor, but I feel she led me astray with a decision related to a small biopsy on my face. I was surprised by this outcome given how much she earned my trust on the front side by explaining things seemingly detailed and thoughtfully. I asked her to remove what I called a “permanent zit” on my forehead which was pretty small but still bothered me. She said it was good I came in because we should probably biopsy it anyway. The info I got about my possible choices led me to do a “punch biopsy” which is more invasive because it requires 2 stitches and removes the root of the thing, you have to have stitches for a week, but gets rid of everything and has a much cleaner straight line scar. She even drew a picture for me (see attached lower left) of the straight line scar I’d have (lower right), which I thought was great. Anything that didn’t look like a zit. The “shave” biopsy on the other hand wouldn’t remove the root, only the surface, and would not require stitches etc. (Diagram top left and circle shaped scar top right). I felt I didn’t have full info and was slightly led astray on two fronts. (1) i wish I had known that the punch biopsy could result in scar tissue under both stitches leading to not only a scar at the removal site but also TWO raised bumps that looks like little zits surrounding it. And (2) I don’t remember her emphasizing the possibility that they wouldn’t get it all and it could grow right back. Here I am, 7 months later, after using scar tape every night, with little Two bumps of scar tissue from the stitches, waiting around for a bump in between them to grow back because the biopsy showed that not all of the “weird cells” were removed and will definitely grow back at some point. It’s understandable that (1) and (2) happened, but I don’t think i had all of the information up front so that I could make the best decision for me, despite her super nice and patient bedside manner. Overall, the healing process including wound care and wearing a bandaid on my forehead for a month and then nightly scar tape was not worth it for the result: which is two smaller (and potential three if the thing grows back) bumps instead of one. If had known what I know now, I would have just had her do a little shave biopsy to make sure it wasn’t something cancerous and keep the little bump I came in with. It’s possible that scarring under stitches is unusual, in which reminds me that the medical assistant was really struggling to get the stitches out and seemed nervous, she ended up poking the wound a bunch without any luck before running for Dr Holmes. All the poking irritated the healing site which was looking good pre removal, and may be related to the scar tissue. I think Dr Holmes is still a good derm and honestly just such a sweet person, and I trust her with the medical side of things, but would be a little scared for her to remove something from my face again due to my experience feeling like my cosmetic result was unexpected.

I had a head to toe checkup for skin abnormalities. The doctor made me feel so comfortable and checked my moles. Didn't feel a thing when she had to take one off. She definitely knows her stuff. Very intelligent and informative. Will definitely be seeing her in the future. You will not regret seeing her. The best! Catherine T. Marino

I recently visited a dermatologist and had a very positive experience. She was extremely professional, knowledgeable, and attentive throughout the entire appointment. She carefully examined my skin, explained everything clearly, and provided a treatment plan that made me feel confident and comfortable. I really appreciated Dr.Kyra Berns how she took the time to answer all my questions and didn’t rush the visit. The level of care and attention to detail was excellent. I would definitely recommend her to anyone looking for a skilled and professional dermatologist.
